If you’ve never had braces before, you might be wondering what to expect. What happens at the first appointment? Does it hurt? Is there anything I can’t eat? Don’t worry – you can read on to learn what getting braces is like (from day one to year one) right here.

Day One

Although it’s completely normal to be a tad nervous before your first visit, there’s nothing to worry about; the process of adhering the braces to your teeth doesn’t hurt at all. At most, you might feel some slight discomfort from keeping your mouth open for long intervals. Even then, the process of drying your teeth, applying the glue, attaching the brackets, and putting the wire in place is relatively quick.

Week One

The week following your first appointment will likely be when you experience the biggest transition. The good news is that you can navigate the adjustment period easily with a few simple steps, including rinsing with warm saltwater periodically, sticking to soft foods (i.e., applesauce, yogurt, scrambled eggs), taking OTC pain medication as directed, and using dental wax to prevent soft tissue irritation.

Month One

At the one-month mark, you might be surprised how well you’ve adjusted to life with braces. At this point, you’ll know what breakfasts, lunches, dinners, and snacks are enjoyable and fit within the dietary restrictions. You’ll also have practice brushing and flossing around your brackets and wires. You may have even had your first adjustment appointment! In short, you’ll be much more seated into life with braces at this point.

Year One

With each passing month, you’ll notice that your teeth are getting straighter and straighter. In fact, there’s a good chance that you’ll see a considerable difference by the one-year mark! Whether you’re rapidly approaching the end of your orthodontic treatment at this point or you still have a few more months or years to go, make sure that you continue to implement good habits, like brushing your teeth after each meal and prioritizing your adjustment appointments with your orthodontist.
